FBI Manhunt For Domestic Terrorism Suspect
SAN JOSE, CA, Dec 10 - The FBI says it is getting closer to nabbing a Silicone Valley man accused of attempting to sabotage power lines in several states.
John Summers used to promote raves at local nightclubs and other more remote locations. But now he faces a different kind of music. The FBI now thinks he may be responsible for as many as 10 individual incidents of sabotage.
The FBI describes the 27-year-old Summers as dangerous, a saboteur, and a domestic terrorist. Ten days ago a witness says she saw him loosening the foundation bolts of a power pole in Cupertino, California.
Summers is wanted for similar crimes in Los Gatos, California, and now added to the list, Idaho and Oregon. In 1998, Summers was convicted of attempted murder. Until 2 weeks ago when he disappeared, Summers was a member of the Peace and Justice Action League of Los Altos, an anti-war group. He's also known to be a strong advocate of the Palestinians and has opposed the war in Iraq.
The Peace and Justice Action League also says they never would have let Summers become a member if they had suspected he might become involved in domestic terrorism.
FBI spokesperson, Patrick Spain, told reporters this morning at a press conference that they are "close to apprehending the fugitive" and the "manhunt is drawing to a close." While Spain would not confirm or deny the reports that Summers is hiding out with local sympathizers in the mountains outside of San Jose, a strong FBI presence was seen earlier today along Highway 17.
This build up of camouflaged agents, vehicles, and military weaponry indicates what appears to be an imminent assault.
